1867 was one of the most important years of South Africa as this is the year-old Erasmus Jacobs found the Eureka Diamond on his father’s farm south of the Orange River, this was the beginning of the history of Diamonds in South Africa.
In this 1867 Cape Town Directory it lists over 4500 inhabitants and there is no discrimination to colour, race or creed and lists everyone from John Evans the Gasman, Edwin Back the French polisher, Frederick Waldek the jeweller as well as many shoemakers, boatmen, labourers, tailors, Malay priests and not to forget September the “inflictor of corporal punishment”
