Did you know that one of the most important documents in the Archives of the Colonial Secretary are the petitions of private persons, 1843-1876 (CSO 2 236-2 281), letters received from private persons, special marriage licences, 1857-1882, naturalization documents and the Byrne Immigration Papers, 1848-1856.
There is a complete index to the special marriage licences. Files CSO 2 858-3 022 contain information pertaining to losses suffered by the civilian population in Natal during the Second Anglo-Boer War, and the resettlement of prisoners of war and people in concentration camps. These documents can be accessed at the Cape Town Archives.
