After t he brothers returned from the frontier war they purchased the farm Quart el Fontein (Kwartelfontein). The large house accomodated the three brothe rs even after William's marriage but when Malcolm married in 1853 the part nership was dissolved with William and David moving to the Bokkeveld. In 1 860 Malcolm was found with his throat slit: having committed suicide.
