He was apprenticed to his doctor father and continued his studies in Irela nd during 1836-7 and graduated in Heidelberg, Germany in 1839 and then ret urned to SA to become his father's partner. On 16 06 1847 he performed t he first operation, an amputation, outside Europe and USA with the u se of an anaesthetic.
William was responsible for the founding of the Botanical Gardens, the lib rary, the Albany museum and in 1875 the Grahamstown Lunatic Asylum..
In March 1867 he identified the shiny pebble picked up by Erasmus Stephan us Jacobs on the farm De Kalk near Hopetown as a 21 carat diamond.
He was a member of the House of Assembly (1881-3), member of the Legislati ve Council (1884-90) and President of SA Medical Congress 1896.
When he died in Thursford House, Beaufort Street. he had been blind for so me time.
