• Notes

  1. Joshua followed his father into the spinning industry and was select ed to visit the European countries to market their products. In St Petersb urg in Russia he met a young English lady, Elizabeth Beadle, who was lady- in-waiting to the Tzarina. He decided it would be more convenient to resi de on the continent and then purchased the Schuttenhof estate on the outsk irts of Antwerp in Belgium. He married Miss Beadle in St Petersburg in 1808 but, as she had no passpor t, he had to smuggle her in a load of hay to cross the Russian border. Th ey resided at Schuttenhof for nearly thirty years and all their six childr en were born there and educated on the Continent. His sons were due for en rolment in the Belgian army for compulsory training and in 1837 Joshua dec ided to sell his estate and return to England. 2. He next decided that his sons would be better off in South Africa. Thr ee of them, John, Frederick and George, and John who was the son of his br other David, arrived late in 1841. Some months later they were joined by t heir parents and the two younger children. (One daughter had died in Belgi um). After a short stay in the Somerset West area, the family crossed t he mountains to settle on various farms in the Caledon area. 3. Joshua returned to Somerset West but became estranged from his wife a nd moved to Stellenbosch in 1851. He eventually moved to Greyton with h is daughter Sarah.
