• Notes

  1. William's father was in a mental institution and the family was destitu te. They were given assistance by the partners of Twentyman & Co. and th is included the arrival of William in the Stormsvlei area in 1844 to mana ge his uncles' farms Stormsvlei and Luipards Kloof (about 4300 ha). He lat er inherited part of the estate and purchased the remainder to establi sh a flourishing enterprise which included a shop, hotel and liquor stor e. He only married twenty years later. The couple resided in England for f our years but returned to Stormsvlei in 1868 where he was later murdere d. His assailant was never traced. Edmund H Burrows - Overberg Odyssey 2.
