• Notes

  In 1836, John and someone named Chipperfield, went in search of Thomas Sho ne who had not arrived in Bathurst with stores from Grahamstown but was la ter found. The two members of the search party were murdered and the bo dy of Chippendale was never found. Bentley's mutilated body was buried whe re it was found on the farm Waaiplaats. Both men are commerated on the Cenotaph at Grahamstown
