  1. He was 12 when he came out to the Cape with his father Miles. He was ta ught to read by his brother Holden. 2. Very skilled with his hands, making many things including wagons and se veral violins. 3. He was involved in several of the frontier wars of 1838, 1846,1873 a nd 1877. 4. He was a member of the Legislative Council representing East London fr om 1879-83. His journal is in the Albany Museum. 5. Farmed at Oakwell near Grahamstown where his brother Mitford was burie d.
