• Notes

  Known as Dick. He moved to Natal in 1830 and in February 1838 warned the B oers of an attack . He was one of the four survivors of the Battle of t he Tugela Gorge on 17 April 1838. In May 1840 he rode from Durban to Grahamstown to obtain help and a stat ue was erected in Durban in 1915 in his honour.
