| 18205 | 1738. Jurgen arrived at the Cape aboard the Beukesteijn to serve the Dut ch East Company as a soldier. A hand-written list of postings at the Cast le which was made in 1930 from the original register in Amsterdam (Cape Ar chives VC 42/1738/39) records his names as Jurgen Hendrik Engelaar. The En gela surname appears to be unique to South Africa so it has perhaps been c orrupted locally from Engelaar. His place of origin is given as Minden b ut this may not have been his birthplace. Note: There is no Umlaut nor ref erence to Heinrich anywhere but his German origin would seem to indicate t hat Jurgen Heinrich is perhaps correct but that version never appears in a ny SA records. 1739 08 20. He entered into an employment contract with Casper Batenhor st as a schoolmaster, "knegt" having been deleted by the official, Petr us Slotsboo. His name is also given as Jurgen Hendrik Engelaar in the cont ract but on this and succeeding documents, he clearly signs his surna me as Engela (Cape Arch Ref CJ2887 R118). This and the register mention ed above are the only two instances where Engelaar appears 1740 08 22. The contract was extended for a further year by endorsement. 1741 07 04. On a plan of central Cape Town, prepared by Carel Wen tzel in 1751, he is shown as being the owner of Erf ZZ9 in Loop Stree t. It appears that this became his permanent dwelling. Note that his kne gt and the draughtsman of the Cape Town plan bear the same name but the la tter was a cartoghrapher and surveyor who arrived at the Cape at 1749. 1751. According to the census he owned 21 slaves, 40 horses, 80 cattle, 9 00 sheep and 800 vines. 1752 03 31. He employed Benedictus Runnow as "Knegt". 1755 09 23.
