He was born in Strathavon, Avondale , Lanarkshire. The da te given on the crypt at Glen Avon is 1 January but the register gives t he date as 5 January (OPR Births 621/0010 0159 where the entry was added l ater and written between two 03 01 1777 baptisms - why? ) 1794.......... At the age of 17 he ran away from home to join the 98th Hi ghland Regiment (Argyllshire and Sutherland) that later became the 91st, w hich was preparing for war against France. 1795..........Private Robert Hart and his regiment of 800 embarked to occu py the Cape where his troopship and thirteen others sailed into False B ay on 4 September after a voyage of four months. On 14 September after unl oading all their guns, equipment and stores the Argyllshire Highlanders we re marching into Cape Town in the name of King George III and his Serene H ighness the Prince of Orange whom the French had expelled form the Netherl ands. 1798..........Hart's regiment marched from Algoa Bay to suppress the van J aarsveld rebellion at Graaff-Reinet 1799..........His regiment was posted to the Eastern Cape and he was prese nt when Chief Ndhlambi invaded the Zuurveld which ended up in a patched pe ace agreement leaving the Xhosa in possession of the land they had occupi ed. He was also stationed at Fort Frederick at Algoa Bay and with canno ns on the beach, helped to drive off the French ship La Preneuse which h ad attacked two British ships in the bay. 1802......... By the Treaty of Amiens peace was ratified between Great Br itian and the French Republic and the Cape of Good Hope was given ba ck to the Batavian Republic. The British trops were withdrawn and Robert H art volunteered for further service in India where they were under the com mand of Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington. After a short tour of duty t here he returned to England via the Cape and was then posted to Hanover, G ermany with the rank of sergeant. 1804..........On 08 April (his abode was Strathavon, Lanarkshire) he marri ed Hanna Tamplin on the Isle of Guersney. 1807..........After the British re-took the Cape, Hart returned on 07 01 1 807 with his wife and baby daughter and , as an ensign, was appointed adju tant to the Cape Corps with which unit he served in the eastern frontier u ntil 1817. 1807..........During the year of his arrival, his regiment assisted in r e-taking the Zuurveld and pushed the Xhosas back over the Great Fish Rive r, thus reclaiming the Albany area where the bulk of the Settlers were loc ated in 1820 1810..........Promoted to Lieutenant 1811.......... Grahamstown was founded on the site, it is told, chos en by Hart and where he built one of the first sod cottages. His family ar rived soon after from Cape Town to take up residence. 1817..........The Cape Corps was disbanded and Hart was put on half-pay. F ortunately he was then appointed superintendent of the government fa rm at Boschberg when Dr Joseph Mackrill resigned. His family joined him th ere. This farm, which was established to provide supplies for the militar y, was so successful that Lord Charles Somerset ploughed back the profi ts into other development work in the colony without obtaining the sancti on of Whitehall. 1820..........Hart assisted the settlers who were allocated land in the vi cinity - particularly the Pringles. 1821.......... In recognition for his services, he was granted a large tra ct of land below the Boschberg and just east of Somerset East. The farm Na udesrivier was previously owned by Marthinus Prinsloo but Hart renam ed it Glen Avon. 1825.......... The arrival of a commission of inquiry into SA affairs alar med the Governor and on 7 January Hart received a terse note warning h im to wind up the farm and dismiss all staff, including himself, by the e nd of January. Within a few weeks the farm was broken up and the new to wn of Somerset was proclaimed. 1825.........The Hart family took up residence on Glen Avon in the newly c ompleted house which was built of stone and was roofed with imported Wel sh slate. Hart was appointed Heemraad in the newly proclaimed district a nd town of Somerset East under the first Landdrost W M McKay. 1829..........Hart finally was placed on full pension after thirty-five ye ars military service. He remained an influential and respected member of t he community and made generous donations for the improvement of the develo ping town of Somerset East. He enthusiastically supported the establishme nt of the NG Church at Somerset East and remained an elder until his death . 1846..........He built a small Presbyterian church on his farm and, in h is will, left 1300 pounds to maintain a minister in Somerset East. Throu gh his generosity the original drostdy was purchased for use as an NG pars onage. 1849.......... On 1 June a Hottentot employee, Piet van de Winter, left Gl en Avon with a wagon-load of oranges for sale. On 2 July he was at Fort Be aufort with the wagon and twelve oxen and was not seen again. Hart plac ed a notice in tne press and offered a reward. 1867..........He was interred in the family crypt which he built on Glen A von.
