It is not known what ship he arrived on but there were several ships that arrived with few boys on that are not listed in any manifests and he would have been one of these. He could read and write but recieved no schooling or religious instruction. He was apprenticed to Paul Retief of Groot Drakenstein and was employed as a farm labourer. He was given sufficient food and good clothes and he was healthy and happy but very small. In 1849 he was a labourer working in Groot Drakenstein for Pieter Izak De Villiers and earned an average of 9d. per day. Also in 1849 during the pressing season he worked for 3 weeks for J. P. De Villiers and earned 9d. per day He was also listed as a labourer with the Corn Farmers during the late harvest season residing at "Pniel Insitution" in Groot Drakenstein and was employed by Jakob de Villiers at Kuilenberg for 4 weeks earning 1s. 6d. & 2s 6d. per day and 1/2 muid barley and 1 muid of corn. | FLYNN, Terry (I85)

He decided to come to the Cape on the advice of his brother-in-law Capt Jo hn Sancroft Damant and sailed in 1817 aboard the Uitenhague Packet which w as so unstable that the family landed at Deal. They again sailed from Lon don in December 1819 aboard the Ocean as a member of Edward Damant's (anot her brother-in-law) party of 57 individuals. They arrived in Table B ay in March 1820 and reached Algoa Bay in April. He was appointed district surgeon in Uitenhage but moved to Cape Town in 1 821 and lived in Wale Street. In 1828 he accepted a position as district s urgeon for Albany with a house provided and an annual salary of 150 pound s. He was allowed to have private patients and in September 1835 he purcha sed what was to become the Albany General Hospital. After serving in the Seventh Frontier War (1846-7) he went into semi-retir ement on Table Farm and became a member of the Legislative Council in 184 8. He died after being injured in a cart accident. Smith labourer living at 8 Wicht Street, Thomas Rich Tinsmith living at 21 Tennant Street Mrs Widow Rich at 104 Waterkant street as well as Widow Rich living at 44 William Street There was a Sarah Rich who died on 24th July 1860 aged 80 years old There was a Thomas Rich who died on 29th August 1866 aged 53 years old living at Zonnebloem 2nd Marriage certificate found for John to Geradina Wilhelmina Hendrina Ross nee Daniels a widow at St. Georges Cathedral on 06th January 1879.
